Safety Eyewear

Safety eyewear is for your protection and no one elses. Far to many accidents that we see in our clinic could have been prevented by just wearing appropriate eyewear. Please don't become a statistic! Ask your employer if they take part in a safety eye wear program.

Many of Alberta's major employers have chosen to take part in the Occupational Vision Care program offered by the Alberta Association of Optometrists. This program allows employees to visit their own optometrist and have a quality pair of prescription or non-prescription safety glasses made up. Optically, prescription safety glasses are superior to the plastic fits over glasses sold at the hardware store. They feel more natural to wear and provide improved visual acuity. This leads to increased employee compliance and further reduces the chance for eye injuries.

Safety glasses differ from every day glasses in a number of categories. In Canada the governing guidelines for safety glasses are set by Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety (CCOHS), which is not the same as the ANSI standards used in the United States. All safety glasses sold in Canada should be CSA certified to ensure that they meet work place standards. Additional job site protection may be required, and certain positions may require additional protection over and above regular safety glasses. These include goggles, face shields and tints that reduce glare or optical radiation (such as in welding). But remember, safety shouldn't stop at the work place. Proper protective eyewear should even be worn at home when performing certain tasks.

10 common causes of eye injuries include:

  • Household Chemicals
  • Workshop and Yard Debris
  • Battery Acid
  • Sport Accidents
  • Swimming
  • Overexposure to Ultraviolet Light
  • Firworks
  • Toys and Games
  • Work Related Injuries
  • Airbages
